About STIAS:

STIAS provides an independent 'creative space for the mind' globally, fostering science and scholarship across all disciplines. Rooted in African values, it cherishes original thinking and innovation. No restrictions on origin, discipline, or affiliation, making it a truly inclusive platform.

Guiding Principles:

- Self-generated projects or STIAS-led initiatives.

- Emphasis on cross-disciplinary discourse.

- Artists-in-residence and public commentators welcomed.

- Limited applications for young scholars post one postdoctoral fellowship.

Obligations & Opportunities:

- Fellows expected to be in residence, dedicating time to their research.

- Participation in Tuesday & Thursday STIAS Fellows’ seminars.

- Lunch at the STIAS Wallenberg Research Centre (Mon-Fri).

- Facilitation of heterogeneity, including artists-in-residence.

Criteria for Selection:

- Level: Highest level of research.

- Innovation: Break new ground, promise new insights.

- Interdisciplinarity: Contribute to different disciplines.

- Relevance: Appropriate for an institute for advanced study, relevance for South Africa and Africa.

- Feasibility: Convincing methodology and research design.

How Selection Works:

- Individual basis selection.

- Preliminary selection by STIAS Fellowship and Research Programme Committee.

- Biannual meeting for final selection and consideration of semester program composition.

- Director guided by the STIAS Academic Advisory Board.

Application Details:

- Terms: Mid-January to mid-June (first semester) or mid-July to mid-December (second semester). For this spring, the deadline would be April 30th, 2024.

- Applications accepted in writing or via email.

- Selection generally concludes 12 months in advance.

- Consideration for shorter or longer residency periods (minimum of six weeks, maximum of two full semesters).
